Welcome to Week 2 of the college football season and peep the new rankings. With the NFL opening their season this week, let’s see what college football has to offer. Last week, my record was 3-2 as things started the way I wanted it. Both Florida teams disappointed and fell hard in their openers. Washington and Auburn showed why both teams could be playoffs teams when the season ends. Alabama showed why they’re the #1 team in the country and Notre Dame could sneak into the playoffs. The goal is to finish the year around the 70% plateau and this week I’ll be predicting four games.
We head to the west coast for the first match-up between two top-20 teams. The 17th ranked USC Trojans will travel to Stanford to face the 10th ranked Cardinal. USC opened the season with a 22-point win over the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. The freshman, J.T. Daniels lead the Trojans to the win after a slow start. When he travels to Stanford this weekend, it’ll be a much tougher environment. Can the freshman lead the Trojans to the win over their rival, Cardinal? Stanford opened their season with a win over San Diego State, but things didn’t go as planned. Bryce Love, the leading Heisman contender was held in check with only 29 yards on the ground. K.J. Costello eventually lead the Cardinal to the win. This should be a defensive battle and I think Bryce Love will have a better game and Stanford win.
Stanford Wins 23-17
We head to SEC Country and to Columbus, South Carolina to be exact for the other game between ranked teams. The 3rd ranked Georgia Bulldogs will face their rivals, 24th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. Georgia had an easy time last week with their 45-0 win over Austin Peay. Georgia didn’t need much from Jake Fromm as Justin Fields got playing time also. The defense looked great also, but they face a much tougher task. Jake Bentley for South Carolina tossed 4 TDs in their 49-15 win over Coastal Carolina. If the Gamecocks want to win the SEC East they must beat the Bulldogs. Can the Gamecocks upset the young and inexperienced Bulldogs? I’m anticipating Jake Fromm will have a great game and lead the Bulldogs to the road win.
Georgia Wins 30-20
We head to Texas for a SEC vs. ACC match-up. The 2nd ranked Clemson Tigers will travel and face the Texas A&M Aggies. These two coaches are familiar with each other as they’ve split their eight matchups when Jumbo Fisher was at Florida State. Clemson is one of the favorites to win the ACC and return to the college football playoffs. Can this tough early season road game be too much for the Tigers? The Jumbo Fisher kicked off with a 59-7 win over the Northwestern State Demons. Can the Aggies pull off the major upset over the Tigers? Clemson has arguably one of the best defenses in the country and their offense is up there also. Kelly Bryant will have a tough time in the hostile environment against one of the up-and-coming teams in the SEC. Either way, I’m riding with the Tigers in a closer game than expected.
Clemson Wins 34-24
We head back to the west coast, Arizona to be exact. The 15th ranked Michigan State Spartans will make a cross country trip to face the Arizona State Sun Devils. Michigan State opened their season with a close win over Utah State. The Spartans will need a much better effort against the Sun Devils. L.J. Scott will have to have a bigger role if the Spartans will be successful this game and beyond. Can the Spartans pick up the huge road win? The Arizona State Sun Devils opened the season with a 49-7 blowout of UTSA. Manny Wilkins tossed 4 TDs and the Herm Edwards Era started off on the right foot. In this game against Michigan State, they’ll be a huge underdog. This is a tough one, but I’m picking the Sun Devils to win a close one.
Arizona State Wins 30-28
