This weekend we had the opening weekend of the NFL and the Eagles beat the Falcons to open on Thursday. We also had the second weekend of college football. In baseball, we’re headed to the postseason with teams in both leagues battling for positioning and a Wild Card spot. We had the finals of the U.S. Open. The NBA will be starting training camp at the end of the month. They took center stage was they inducted their 2018 Hall of Famers.
The Washington Mystics are battling the Seattle Storm in the WNBA Finals. The Mystics outlasted the Atlanta Dream to get to the Finals. The Seattle Storm beat the Phoenix Mercury on their end. After a tough Game 2 on Sunday, the Storm took a 2-0 lead as the series head to Washington.
Serena Williams advanced to another final but fell short against Naomi Osaka in straight sets. As we know, the match had its share of controversy and Serena was fined over 17K for Code Violations. Rafael Nadal had to retire in his semifinal match and Djokovic went on to win his 14th major title.
After the major trade to Chicago, Khalil Mack and the Bears defense looked great. Aaron Rodgers looked like the old Rodgers after leading the Packers to win after returning from injury. New Orleans and Tampa Bay looked like two Big-10 teams as they combined for 88 points. Tampa Bay went to New Orleans and beat the Saints 48-40. In a defensive battle, Carolina outlasted Dallas 16-8. The Patrick Mahomes Era got off the right foot as he led the Chiefs to a 38-28 win after his big game. Andrew Luck looked great in his return. In Cleveland, we had a tie after a crazy game between the Steelers and Browns. Tonight, we have two Monday night games featured on ESPN. The New York Jets and Sam Darnold visit the Detroit Lions. In the second game, the Los Angeles Rams will travel to Oakland to face the Raiders.
In the American League, we saw what many thinks is a preview of the ALCS. Mitch Moreland hit a walk-off single to give the Red Sox a 6-5 win to avoid the sweep. Houston won the season series 4-3. On the west coast, the Atlanta Braves beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5 on Sunday to increase their lead in the NL East. With the season getting closer to the end, Arizona need to win some games. They’re in reach of winning the division and getting a Wild Card berth. With about three weeks remaining in the season, who will make a run and make the playoffs?
College Football featured a pair of battles between ranked teams. The first one saw the Georgia Bulldogs whoop the South Carolina Gamecocks. In the second game, Stanford used their smothering defense to beat down the USC Trojans. Alabama continues to prove why they’re the best team in the country. On the other hand, Clemson came really close to falling on the road against Texas A&M. Florida continued their downfall by losing at home to Kentucky, snapping their 31-game winning streak against the Wildcats. Oklahoma had an impressive win, but they lose Rodney Anderson for the season with a knee injury. In the AP poll, the top-4 remain Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State.
