Everyone is talking about Lebron James declining the final year of his contract making him a free agent. Before that, Paul George did the same thing and DeAndre Jordan has become a free agent also. One name people have pushed to the back burner is DeMarcus Cousins. If Cousins didn’t rupture his Achilles, Cousins would probably be the most coveted free agent outside of Lebron. Before his injury, you can make the argument that Cousins looked like an MVP candidate. After his trade from Sacramento, Cousins and Davis dominated the league as they both were a double-double machine. The soon-to-be-28-year-old All-Star is in a compromising position with his injury. There will be no team to offer him a long-term deal after such a devastating injury. The free agent will get some looks, but he will have to prove himself for a year or two before getting that big deal.
New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans had an amazing run in the playoffs last year. After sweeping the Portland Trailblazers in the opening round, New Orleans played the Golden State Warriors. After his injury, Anthony Davis went on to finish in the top-3 of the MVP voting. Rajon Rondo and Jrue Holiday step their games up and with Cousins, they had a legit shot of beating the Warriors. The Pelicans probably be without Rajon Rondo, who is a free agent. With Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday, this team with Cousins for a postseason run could be deadly. DeMarcus Cousins could sign for a year or two and see how far this team could with both All-Star big men. If things don’t work out for those two years, he can test the free agent market in his prime.
The Dallas Mavericks have been rumored to be the favorite to land the services of DeMarcus Cousins. With the addition of Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks are primed to be on the rise again. Dennis Smith Jr. looks like he will be one of the top players in the league in the future. DeMarcus Cousins would be a nice addition to this up-and-coming team and with future Hall-Of-Famer, Dirk Nowitzki. The big holdup with this deal is that the Mavericks could be their interest in DeAndre Jordan. Although this would be a great fit for Cousins, it seems like this DeAndre Jordan is the direction they will go.
I’m just throwing this one in here because I’m an Atlanta Hawks fan. First off, DeMarcus Cousins is from nearby Alabama, so it’ll be close to home. DeMarcus Cousins and the Atlanta Hawks both have something to prove. With the Hawks drafting, Omari Spellman from Villanova, Cousins would be a great mentor for the young, big man. The deal could be for a year or two so they both could move on via free agency hits. With the young core the Hawks are building and possibly having tow Lottery picks next year, this could be the beginning of something. Even though this sounds great, don’t bet on it happening.
