It’s official! Carmelo Anthony signs one year deal with the Houston Rockets for $2.4 million dollars. It’s been a crazy offseason for Carmelo as he first opted in to his $27.9 million contract with Oklahoma City. After signing Paul George to a long term extension, Oklahoma City faced a hefty luxury tax bill. Rumors ran rampant about the Thunder releasing or trading Carmelo Anthony to save money. In my opinion, there were about 6 places that could use Carmelo Anthony. Oklahoma City eventually traded Carmelo to the Atlanta Hawks for Dennis Schroder. As expected, Atlanta wanted to unload Schroder because he demanded a trade and they received an expiring contract. After the trade, Atlanta bought Carmelo out, which allowed him to sign wherever he wanted.
With Carmelo singing with the Houston, he’ll replace Trevor Ariza, who signed a one year deal with the Phoenix Suns. Carmelo will be reunited with Coach Mike D’Antoni, whom he played for in New York. Can Carmelo help propel Houston to an NBA Finals appearance? Will he have a better year with Houston than he did with Oklahoma City? Only time will tell as the Western Conference will be tough as ever.
